The Soil Remembers: Stories That Still Grow
There are stories that live in books.
And then there are stories that live in people.
At 91 years old, Larry Edwards, a proud Decatur County, Bainbridge, Georgia resident, carries history not as something he studied — but as something he lived.
His voice reflects decades of change.
His memory holds lessons shaped by resilience, faith, and endurance.
His presence reminds us that history is not distant — it is personal.
As we prepare for “The Soil Remembers: Stories That Still Grow”, we are honored to feature Larry’s story as part of this powerful community gathering.
This event is more than a program. It is a bridge.
A bridge between generations.
A bridge between legacy and responsibility.
A bridge between the soil that remembers — and the seeds we are planting today.
Inspired by the enduring legacies of Frederick Douglass and Booker T. Washington, and featuring keynote speaker Nettie Washington Douglass, this education forum invites parents, youth, leaders, and community members to reflect, learn, and grow together.
When we listen to elders like Mr. Edwards, we do more than hear stories.
We receive wisdom.
We gain perspective.
We are reminded of who we are — and who we are called to become.
In a time when attention spans are short and headlines move quickly, sitting in a room to hear a 91-year-old neighbor share lived experience is powerful.
It is grounding.
It is necessary.
It is transformative.
This is our opportunity, Decatur County.
To show up.
To support one of our own.
To bring our teens so they understand the shoulders they stand on.
To honor the soil that remembers — and commit to the stories still growing.
